OUR HEROES

Nélida Barajas

“The Ally of Women Fishers”

Nélida lives in Puerto Peñasco, Sonora, where she works to empower women’s fishing cooperatives. She has led national and international projects and built partnerships among organizations committed to ocean conservation. She is currently Executive Director of the Intercultural Center for Desert and Ocean Studies (CEDO).

Esteban García-Peña

“The Fish Ambassador”

Esteban grew up admiring Jacques Cousteau and dreaming of exploring the ocean depths. As an adult, he realized that marine ecosystems face growing threats from overfishing, pollution, and climate change. In response, he helped develop a census of marine species to identify endangered populations, better understand marine biodiversity, and promote sustainable seafood consumption. He currently serves as Fisheries Campaign Director at Oceana Mexico.

Valeria Mas
